Ordering personalised jewellery is such a special process—there’s nothing quite like having a piece made just for you or someone you love. But there are a few common missteps that can turn the experience from exciting to stressful. Here’s what to watch out for:

1. Not Double-Checking the Details
Double (and triple!) check your order details—whether it’s initials, dates, names or birthstones. Here at KBN, we get started on your piece the day after you place your order, so if a change is needed after that point, there may be a fee involved. Once the tools are out and the solder’s hot, we’re on a roll!

2. Skipping the Sizing Guide
Sizing can be sneaky. We have a full size guide available, but it’s always best to measure if you can. For necklaces, the easiest way is to use a piece of string around your neck to find your perfect length—then measure the string with a ruler. Don’t just guess—especially if it’s a gift!

3. Leaving It Too Late
Making a custom piece takes time, and that’s on top of shipping. If you’ve got a date in mind (a birthday, anniversary, or special event), be sure to order with plenty of notice. We do offer a rush option (for a small fee) if you need it quickly—it bumps your order to the front of our queue!

4. Not Understanding the Materials
Gold-filled, gold-plated, solid gold, sterling silver… it’s a lot to take in, but it makes a difference. Gold-filled (what we use here at KBN) has 100x more gold than plating, and it’s bonded to last. If you’re not sure what’s best for you, it’s always okay to ask!

5. Overlooking the Brand’s Policies
Always have a quick look at the brand’s policies before ordering. At KBN, we offer a 180-day warranty for manufacturing faults, and our 12-month gold guarantee covers the gold layer on all our gold-filled pieces. Knowing your coverage helps keep expectations clear and gives you peace of mind.

Custom jewellery should feel meaningful and exciting—not stressful. A little extra prep can go a long way!
